Facilitating and accelerating the introduction of electric Regional Air Mobility* as a new proposition for efficient, low-carbon and comfortable inter-regional traveling to and between regional airports. A group of 18 aviation and mobility organizations, working together as Power Up**, committed to this objective today. By signing a Memorandum of Understanding, Eindhoven Airport, Groningen Airport Eelde, Lelystad Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Royal Schiphol Group, along with ASL Group, LUCY, KLM, Evia Aero, Maeve, Vaeridion, VoltAero, the Dutch Railways, Deloitte, M3 Consultancy, NACO, and Royal NLR have agreed to jointly work on paving the way for electric Regional Air Mobility (eRAM*).
The partners will define the main features of the airport experience for passengers and the operational procedures at the airports with the aim of conducting test flights with various electric aircraft technologies. The vast knowledge of the Power Up partners from different countries ensures the proposition is robust towards future technology advances and regulatory trends. Consequently positioned well as part of future electric door-to-door mobility solutions.
Power Up was launched in 2021 by the main regional airports in the Netherlands with support of the Royal Schiphol Group, KLM and a select group of other partners. Power Up aims to facilitate and accelerate the introduction of electric Regional Air Mobility to improve regional connectivity in a cost-effective, environmental-friendly and flexible way. Following an extensive period to study the feasibility and assessing the relevance of new electric aircraft technologies for markets, the environment and communities, this Memorandum of Understanding marks the next step in the development of Power Up. Regional airports involved in Power Up aim to be operational ready and have a harmonized service offering towards passengers and airlines in place by 2026 in order to accommodate the first electric commercial passenger aircraft soon after.
The Memorandum of Understanding is signed for a period of 2 years with the option to extend.
*electric Regional Air Mobility (eRAM) is defined as commercial passenger flights with 9 to 50-seater aircraft with electric engines powered by either batteries, a hybrid-electric or a hydrogen-electric powertrain on distances from 150 to 750 km.
